I am able to share individual folders and devices on my Vista Computer which I can access from my XP computer, however when I share the entire C: root directory on the Vista computer and set permissions to access all, my windows XP computer will not access the C: drive on Vista, it gives me a message that I do not have authorization to access the C: share. I have done everything that I can possible think of, I have worked on this problem for two days without any success... Can any one offer any suggestions? -- FJS

You will need to be more specific.
How did you attempt to access the C: on Vista from a XP box?

I attempted to connect to the C: drive on my Vista machine by clicking on it's listing in the MSHOME listing of Explorer.
I can access Public files on the Vista machine but not gain access to the C: drive and select any folder from there.

you will need to set C: on Vista as a shared folder before anyone can access it. however, it is generally not advisable to share the root directories.

do not know if this fits your situation, but if you install vista by booting from DVD, it installs it as "C". regardless of your choice of partitions. if this fits your case, it is possible "C" is trying to share "C"

I don't fully understand what you are saying, however I did a new install from windows XP, I did not have to boot from the DVD to install on C: which contains my system files. -- FJS

what happens, if you install by booting from DVD, vista installs itself on drive letter named "C". if you install from another OS, not dvd, then the drive letter of the selected partition is used instead.

Ok, I have been reading the documentation all that I could find, and here is what I think is happening:
(1) I know that I can copy a folder to the Public Folder's folder, which I can access via my XP computer, providing that I placed the folder in Public Folder.
(2) When I try to share the same folder straight on, it ask for a user name, so that I can access it on another computer; I select my user name, then set the permissions.
I suppose that my XP computer is to ask for that user name and password, but is does not ask me anything I just get the following message on my XP computer:
\\WINSTON\downloads is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.
I know I am missing something here....

Ok, after aggrivating myself for 5 days, I finally figured-out the answer on my own; here it is: In the properties dialog box of the folder that you want to share in Vista, select the "security" tab. under "group or user" add "Everyone, and set the permissions accordingly.
